Happy New Year

Part of what I like about being a teacher is the fresh start we are afforded each year. June comes and goes, and with it a bittersweet end to a year's work. Then, a break from it all, and a new start in September.

As a teacher I've always felt that the new year began in September, not January. I operate according to this calendar. This means that today is New Year's Eve. I finished school for the year today; packed up my things, said goodbye to my class, had a delicious lunch with my colleagues, drank a few too many glasses of wine and enjoyed the company of my fellow teachers as friends.

I've been reflecting on this new year for a few weeks. It all seems even more significant to me this year, because of all I've been through. I am not the same person that started this year last September. My whole understanding of the world has changed, in ways I can hardly explain. And, again, the letting go of the past, though welcome, is still bittersweet. And I am grateful for another fresh start.

So, Happy New Year to you, and to me.

I agree the year ends in June and begins again in September- I don't know summer is- a long new year's eve party? I'm taking my first graders to second grade next year so I'm not sure how I'll feel in the fall. I can't WAIT to so all of you soon! Maureen

It was great reading your entry this afternoon. I do feel the same about the calendar year. All of my calendars begin with September and end with June although I am doing some work this summer. We need the summer to let go of one year and ready ourselves for the next. As educators it is nice that we have a couple of months to do that. I am so anxious to see you in 4 weeks. Being all together this summer will do a world of good for you, your family and our family as a whole.
Hope to catch you on the Skype soon. Mom is on board now although she can't get the video to work. "Is it up when it's on?" "I don't know." "Call tech support!"
Love to all and see you soon.
Mike
